A small seaside village 25 min (17.9 km) via R336 West of Galway City. An Spidéal is a friendly vibrant town, where the local people speak both Irish and English. Spiddal is best known for Colaiste Chonnacht to which students come from all over Ireland and the world to learn the Irish language, culture, traditions and have fun. The Connemara village name is thought to have come from Ospidéal, meaning hospital, named after a hospital within the village many centuries ago.
The signposts are all in the Irish language and you will hear it spoken in the shops, pubs and restaurants. locals are proud of there Irish heritage and would be more than happy to teach you a couple of words if you ask.
